Follow live coverage as Chelsea face Newcastle United today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea vs Newcastle United

16:39

Yet again, Chelsea have Cole Palmer to thank, as they win 2-1 against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge. The hosts thought they had the opener as Palmer's fourth-minute strike kissed the base of the right post as Jackson played him in. However, celebrations were denied as the England man was just adjudged offside. The eventual opener arrived in the 18th minute, and again Palmer was involved, as he carved Newcastle open with a superb ball through to Neto on the left. The nimble Portuguese crossed for Jackson to tap home for his second goal in two matches. Newcastle pieced together a lovely move to restore parity in the 32nd minute. Livramento worked the ball up with Guimaraes and then Joelinton, before Hall was played in to cross for Isak to tap home for his second goal of the term. After the interval, Chelsea came out strongly, and restored their lead almost instantly. In the 47th minute, the hosts surged forward and Lavia gave the star-man the ball before he struck sweetly into the bottom-left corner for his seventh goal of the league season. Chelsea held out in a gritty second half, and were denied further additions to their lead by Pope, and an overturned penalty shout by VAR. Yet, they move fourth in the table. Today, the hosts exceeded their 1.68 xG, while Newcastle underperformed from their xG of 1.85. The Magpies have now lost six of their last eight games in the capital (W2), and remain in 12th. Thank you for joining us today, goodbye!

Chelsea vs Newcastle United

15:28

We’re back underway in West London as the visitors kick off the second half.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United

15:28

Chelsea have admittedly looked the more comfortable of the two sides, however, Newcastle have worked well to take one of few chances they have created. Chelsea are unbeaten in their last eight Premier League games when drawing at half time (W6 D2) since a 2-1 loss at Wolves last December. Newcastle have lost just one of their last five games when level at half time in the Premier League (W2 D2), a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace in April. The Blues have exceeded their xG of 0.96, while Newcastle have underperformed their 1.43 xG. Chelsea have a win percentage at the break of 45.6%. A draw sits at 31.9% probability, while a Newcastle win is at 22.5%.

However, celebrations were denied as the England man was just adjudged offside. The eventual opener arrived in the 18th minute, and again Palmer was involved, as he carved Newcastle open with a superb ball through to Neto on the left. The Portuguese scampered away from his marker and crossed for Jackson to tap home for his second goal in two matches. Newcastle have given away a number of nibbly fouls already this afternoon. It feels as though a second Chelsea goal is imminent. It’s clear the favoured side too, as 41% of their attacks so far in this game have come down the left-hand side.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United

15:22

The comfortable tempo is continuing for Chelsea. They’ve firmly put their stamp on this fixture already. They are unbeaten in their last 16 Premier League games when scoring the opening goal (W11 D5) since a 2-4 defeat at home to Wolves.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United

15:18

Guimaraes is down and writhing as the visitors want a penalty! The ref hasn’t even given a foul. Which is bizarre, as on contact, Colwill was pointing outside the box. An admission of guilt doesn’t change anything for Hooper.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United

15:18

Neto has an effort blocked as Chelsea look the more comfortable of the two sides so far. However, the resulting corner from the left comes to nothing.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United

15:17
