Chelsea star snubbed by Thomas Tuchel in pre-season 'impressing' Graham Potter

New Chelsea boss Graham Potter could be about to give Armando Broja a chance with the forward impressing in training.

The newly appointed 47-year-old is in the process of assessing his squad at Stamford Bridge and sees potential in the Albanian international, who impressed last term on loan at Southampton. Potter believes the forward could work effectively in his high press system, reports The Sun.

Chelsea found themselves light in the forward department this summer after allowing both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner to leave west London. Thomas Tuchel bought in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona as he sought to bolster his options having left Broja out of a pre-season squad, although he did use him six times off the bench before his sacking.

Tuchel said in the summer: "Right now when he arrived, it’s clear he’s trying to impress and is just trying to become a Chelsea player as soon as possible. After his loan at Southampton, the situation was very clear for him to make the next step, to show his improvement and make an impression in pre-season."

The 21-year-old was linked with a loan move away before the window closed, but Potter's arrival could give him fresh hope and he was bought off the bench to replace Aubameyang in Potter's first game at the helm against Red Bull Salzburg.

Potter has taken over a Chelsea side in something of a transition after their summer takeover and a mass overhaul of players. It leaves him looking to implement a style with a group of players who have lost two of their six games thus far.

The new boss said after Wednesday's draw: "They are intelligent, top players, working hard for each other. They are disappointed because results haven't gone as well as they'd like and you can feel that. But it's my job to get results that we all want."

Potter surprised some by playing with Raheem Sterling as a wing-back in his first game, which gave the Englishman far more defensive responsibility than he is accustomed to. Reece James was on the other flank with Marc Cucurella, who worked with Potter at Brighton, part of a defensive trio.

When quizzed on whether playing Sterling in that role in a risk he said: "There is that but you have to organise around that. You don't want Raheem defending in his box too often and I don't think he did. I think Marc Cucurella handled that situation well."
