Chelsea should run a mile if they are offered Cristiano Ronaldo again after bombshell Man United interview

Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking for a new club in January, having accused Manchester United of betraying him.

Chelsea were offered the chance to sign the 37-year-old in the summer. Should the opportunity present itself again after the World Cup, the Blues should run a mile.

Ronaldo’s extraordinary attack on United should set alarm bells ringing at Stamford Bridge.

Co-owner Todd Boehly met Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes in the summer and discussed the prospect of signing him with Thomas Tuchel.

The then Chelsea head coach knocked back the idea, saying he did not need another forward after signing Raheem Sterling, only to change his mind to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

There was concern about how Ronaldo’s personality would impact the dressing room.

His bombshell interview with Piers Morgan for TalkTV is a reminder of why that was the case.

United are in a similar situation to Chelsea last season.

Romelu Lukaku conducted an explosive interview with Sky Italia last December in which he criticised Tuchel. The £97.5million striker was dropped and later loaned back to Inter.

Lukaku was not a good fit for Tuchel’s style of football, neither is Ronaldo for Graham Potter.

Chelsea’s owners were attracted to what Ronaldo could do for the club off the pitch.

But they must now realise that signing a player who wants the focus to be on one individual rather than the team would only undermine their project.
