Chelsea's worst-case scenario that could still see them relegated from the Premier League

It has been one of the most miserable seasons in Chelsea's modern history, with the Blues seeing three different figures sit in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat between the start of the campaign and the end.

The torrid return has come as quite the shock given under the regime of owner Todd Boehly the club spent more than £600million on new players since last summer. However, that eye-watering investment has failed to translate into results and in turn Chelsea currently languish all the way down in 12th.

Frank Lampard has failed to steady the ship after taking the reins on an interim basis following Graham Potter's dismissal, with the ex-Brighton man also underwhelming after succeeding Thomas Tuchel.

In the aftermath of another sobering defeat to London rivals Arsenal on Tuesday night, rival fans are now dreaming of the ultimate humiliation for Chelsea - relegation. While it is a long shot, it is not impossible.

Mathematically, the Blues could still go down this season. With 13 league defeats to their name so far this term, Chelsea boast a feeble points tally of 39 from 32 fixtures. The distance between themselves and 18th-placed Nottingham Forest is not as big as Lampard would like.

Nine points separate Chelsea from the bottom three, while 16th and 17th placed Leicester and Leeds are also nine points away from the Blues.

For Lampard's men to go down, it would require an astonishing uptick in form from sides currently below them.

All three of Forest, Leicester and Leeds would have to pick up at least 10 points from their final four games and considering the latter make the trip to Manchester City on Saturday, that seems unlikely.

It would also mean Bournemouth on 39 points, Wolves on 37 and West Ham with 34 would all need to pick up enough points to overtake Lampard’s men.

What would also need to happen and frankly is more likely, is Chelsea losing all five of their remaining fixtures.

The Blues have to make the trip to Bournemouth, before welcoming fellow strugglers Forest to Stamford Bridge a week later.

They then travel to reigning champions and title chasing Manchester City and are back in Manchester four days later to face off with United at Old Trafford.

Chelsea's season comes to an end with a home game against Newcastle United who could still be fighting tooth and nail for Champions League qualification if Liverpool run them close.

Chelsea have never been relegated from the Premier League since its inception in 1992 and in reality are likely to continue that impressive record this time, though they've run it far closer than anyone associated to the club would have liked.
