Chelsea's two contenders for boss before Thomas Tuchel as pressure on Graham Potter grows

Chelsea could turn to two managers they considered appointing before hiring Thomas Tuchel as options to replace Graham Potter.

The former Brighton boss is desperately struggling in the Stamford Bridge hot seat following his arrival in September of last year. The Blues currently languish all the way down in 10th, way off the pace of what is usually expected at the club and Champions League qualification for next season looking more and more like a distant prospect.

With that in mind, pressure on Potter is increasing and should the Blues fail to progress to the last eight of the Champions League the discontent against the Chelsea boss will only get louder. Borussia Dortmund boast a 1-0 advantage over Chelsea ahead of Tuesday night's second leg in west London.

If things turn too sour for owner Todd Boehly to ignore, Chelsea could divert their attention to two figures they were interested in hiring before Tuchel arrived while the club were still owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

The first is former Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick. The German was offered an interim role at Stamford Bridge in early 2021 but the deal failed to materialise and he ended up at Old Trafford months later, though it was hardly a successful stint.

Rangnick ended his time at United as an unpopular figure due to failing to spark a significant upturn in results, though that may not deter the Chelsea faithful who are growing increasingly impatient with Potter.

The German coach is currently in charge of the Austrian national team but could be tempted by a second stab at the Premier League.

The second option Chelsea looked at following Frank Lampard's sacking in January 2021 was current Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, who was offered the role at Stamford Bridge while he was still at the helm of another Bundesliga outfit in Red Bull Leipzig.

Naglesmann is now leading the German champions, who are currently locked in a gripping title race as they sit top of the table but level on points with Dortmund on an equal amount of games played.

Meanwhile, Potter recently discussed speculation surrounding his future and conceded poor results have left his position 'in peril'.

Speaking ahead of the second-leg against Dortmund, he told reporters: "When you are a head coach and you start on this journey you say 'well if the results aren't good enough then you know your job is in peril.' That's the life we lead.

"I just have to accept that and do my best and try to improve the situation we are in until there is a point where we are not able to go forward. But that hasn't been the case and we keep fighting."
