Chelsea's Tammy Abraham buyback clause explained as Man Utd tipped to complete transfer

Tammy Abraham has been in Italy for two years now and it's fair to say things have gone pretty well for him. The Englishman has 36 goals in 102 matches for Roma - averaging a goal every 2.8 games.

His first season in the Italian capital did go better than this one, with 27 of those 36 goals coming in 2021/22. He has, however, made seven assists this campaign, to add to the nine goals he has scored, meaning his goal involvement tally stands at 16 in 49 matches.

He has made no secret of his desire to return to England one day, telling talkSPORT last year: "Of course I grew up in England, I’m a London boy. So maybe one day I’ll be back in the Premier League to make noise there. But for me right now it’s about focusing on Rome, on doing the best I can and hopefully winning these guys a trophy which they haven’t done in many years."

Many reports have linked Abraham with a return to the Premier League this summer, with Reece James doing his best to encourage the frontman back to Stamford Bridge. Abraham admitted he would "never say never" to going back to west London and talking to Tuttomercatoweb, Abraham said: "I still talk to so many Chelsea players, Reece James always tells me to come back!"

Chelsea are not the only club on the lookout for a new striker this summer, with Manchester United also keen. Both side have been linked with the likes of Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, while Abraham could be another to add to the list now.

Particularly as former United striker Louis Saha has told United to sign Abraham. Speaking to OLBG, he said: "Tammy Abraham will be great for Manchester United. His work rate is outstanding also. He could be an ideal replacement for Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford."

But Chelsea could have the advantage when it comes to bringing Abraham back to England. The Blues sold Abraham to Roma in summer 2021, but as part of the deal they inserted a buyback clause.

That clause, which comes into effect this July, states that Chelsea can re-sign the now 25-year-old if they place a bid of €80million (£69.5million). And of course if Abraham agrees to the move, which it sounds like he would.

United can obviously make the same offer - or even a lower one if Roma deem that acceptable - and beat Chelsea to the punch. But the Blues, under a manager in Mauricio Pochettino who likes to offer young players their opportunity - seem to have the upper hand.
