Former Chelsea player and assistant manager Jody Morris has defended winger Christian Pulisic, though he claims that the forward “worries” too much about his game. The USA international has struggled to gain consistency this season, which has often left him on the fringes of the first-team.
The 23-year-old joined from Borussia Dortmund for over £50million in 2019, boasting huge potential at a young age. While he has shown sparks of that, the forward has only managed to start just over one-third of the Premier League season, scoring six and assisting two in 22 appearances in all competitions.
This has led to some speculation surrounding his future with the Blues, with the Qatar 2022 World Cup just on the horizon for the national team captain. Manager Thomas Tuchel discussed the future of the American, calling for calm.

“You will never see happy faces from players who are not selected. With me and Christian, there is zero problem. In some matches he has a huge impact from the bench. I didn't even know [about his dad's tweet]. It has nothing to do with it.
“The players are responsible for being in the team and staying in the team. Am I always right? For sure, not. Is it always fair? For sure, not. The reaction from Christian has been the opposite, he's very strong, very positive in the last weeks.”
In light of such discussions, former assistant Morris has defended the playmaker, having worked with him in his time at Chelsea. He told StadiumAstro : “I think he thinks about his game a lot, maybe he worries about it a little bit too much.
“I do believe he’s had some really good spells here [at Chelsea] it just coincided sometimes with the fact that when he was going through his best spells he did pick up an injury.”
It remains to be seen whether Pulisic can push on and earn a first-team place on a consistent basis, though this summer could be a huge indicator as to where his future lies.
