Edouard Mendy has been crowned the best goalkeeper at the Africa Cup of Nations following Senegal's victory over Egypt in the final of the competition on Sunday.
The match went to penalties following a 120 minute stalemate, with Senegal being the better of the two sides from twelve yards, winning 4-2.
Mendy stopped Mohanad Lasheen with a superb save to his right to set the stage for Liverpool man Sadio Mane who kept his nerves to slot home, resulting in Senegal's first ever triumph in the competition.
As cited by the Metro, speaking after the game, Mendy said: "We are proud as we never won before.
"We worked really hard to win this trophy and today we won as a group, as a country, and that’s why I’m super proud."
Asked how tense the penalty shootout was at the end of the contest, Mendy replied: "Yeah, it was for me, but also for the shooters.
"They did really well and I tried to give my best to save one shot and I did so I’m super happy."
His heroics, as well as his performances throughout the competition, meant that he was named goalkeeper of the tournament.
The award means the Chelsea shot stopper has added another individual award to his cabinet, shortly after winning FIFA's Best men's goalkeeper of the year in January.
Mendy will now join up with his Blues teammates in Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup as he looks to win another major honour with his club following their success in the Champions League last May.
