Chelsea players show their support as England beat Germany at Wembley to win Euro 202224634466

Tributes and praise for England Women's national team continue to pour in after the Lionesses managed to overcome Germany 2-1 after extra-time at Wembley to lift the European Championship trophy. Goals from Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly secured the victory for Sarina Wiegman's side, cancelling out a well-worked equaliser from Lina Magull.

It continues an incredible run for the Dutch coach, who is now unbeaten in all 12 matches she has been in charge of in the competition, having previously won with the Netherlands in 2017. The continuation of that streak has seen the country win their first major honour since 1966, when the men's side won the World Cup, also on home soil.

Wiegman's impacted can be seen in the results, but Player of the Tournament Beth Mead explained exactly how she has improved the side: "Communication has been a lot better since Sarina came in. We’ve done stuff off the pitch together - that’s made us more comfortable.

“We trust now that what we say to each other is for the best and that it won’t go outside our group. It’s become easy to speak to each other. Whether it’s been with the defensive unit or down the right-hand side, we have been far more open about what we want. Sarina has instilled that in us and it’s had a big effect."

The final was a moment shared across the nation, with a Wembley attendance of 87,192 breaking the record attendance of any European Championship final. The victory is hugely important, but the legacy it continues beyond that is arguably even bigger, with many more tuning in to watch.

Chelsea Women's official Twitter account posted a picture of the winning England squad simply captioned with the word 'PROUD'.

Plenty of the game's biggest stars also showed their support over social media too, including a number of Chelsea players. Raheem Sterling took to Twitter and simply put: "History-makers" with the picture of Kelly's celebration after scoring the winner.

Reece James - whose sister Lauren plays for Chelsea in the WSL - also took to his account to write a heartfelt message of support: "Wow! Congratulations @Lionesses! Today you've made history, the 1966 deadlock is broken!

"The Women's game has grown so much recently & it's only heading in one direction! You've all inspired us all & every young girl wanting to follow their dreams. This is just the start…"

Mason Mount was also pictured at Wembley alongside Manchester City star Phil Foden, with the pair celebrating wildly on his Instagram as the Lionesses scored the winner. It shows the level of support across the game, with plenty more to come in the future.
