Chelsea player ratings vs Crystal Palace: Ruben Loftus-Cheek makes big impact with Jorginho too passive

Chelsea made it to their third consecutive FA Cup final with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Wembley on Easter Sunday.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount scored after a tight first-half to put Thomas Tuchel’s side into their second domestic cup final of the season.

James Robson was at Wembley to rate the Chelsea players...

Edouard Mendy 7

Wonder save kept Kouyate at bay in the first half and Chelsea on level terms when Palace looked the more threatening.

Cesar Azpilicueta 6

Played at wingback with James inside as the third of a central defensive three. It cost Chelsea a lot from an attacking point of view.

Reece James 8

Understandable that Tuchel opted to play him in the centre to try to deal with the pace of Palace’s attacks and it worked from a defensive sense.

Andreas Christensen 9

Chelsea’s best player in the first half – denying Mateta early on and then Zaha later. His pace and anticipation were crucial.

Antonio Rudiger 8

His speed meant Palace struggled to get in behind despite their livewires up front.

Jorginho 5

Not effective enough with his use of the ball. Too passive on too many occasions when Chelsea needed something more incisive.

Mateo Kovacic 5

Tuchel will be desperately hoping his injury is not serious. Deserved start after his outstanding form in recent weeks, but his failure to shake off an early ankle twist was not a good sign.

Marcos Alonso 6

Did not get forward as much as might have been expected, but that was because of the threat posed by Palace on the break.

Mason Mount 7

A quality finish killed this game off. He did not manage to burst through the Palace defence from deep on too many occasion, but that was a vital.

Kai Havertz 7

Two decisive moments from him led to goals for Chelsea. His run and cross was deflected into Loftus-Cheek’s path for the first goal – and it was his lofted cross to Werner that led to Mount’s strike.

Timo Werner 7

He is enjoying his best spell for Chelsea. Real composure in the build-up to Mount’s goal – first to control the ball on his chest, then to pick out the pass.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Kovacic, 26) 8

Unlucky not to start after his outstanding performance against Real Madrid. His bursting runs put Chelsea on the front foot in the second half. Brilliant goal.

Romelu Lukaku (Havertz, 76) 4

Did not have a lot of time to make an impact.

N’Golo Kante (Jorginho, 76) 5

Surprise to see him left out. Tuchel saving his legs for Arsenal.

Hakim Ziyech (Mount, 76) 5

Did not take long to have a swing at goal and a danger as Palace left space at the back.

Thiago Silva (Christensen, 82)

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Pulisic, Saul, Sarr
