Chelsea paid record £22million fee to Brighton to help secure Graham Potter as new Blues boss

Chelsea have paid Brighton & Hove Albion £22 million in compensation for taking Graham Potter, a world record sum for a manager.

Todd Boehly made the decision to sack Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday, and the American wasted no time contacting his ideal replacement as the Blues announced the appointment of Potter in a statement the very next day: "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to welcome Graham Potter as our new Head Coach, joining us on a five-year contract to bring his progressive football and innovative coaching to the Club.

In that figure, both clubs have come to an agreement over his staff members that have been by his side at Östersunds FK, Swansea, and then Brighton in his assistant Billy Reid, first-team coaches Bjorn Hamberg and Bruno, goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts and assistant head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay.

"Potter is one of the most exciting coaches in the game, starting his journey in Sweden before bringing his talents to the English game over the past four seasons."

Brighton didn't want Potter to leave the club, though and securing him ended up being more expensive than perhaps Chelsea would've liked or anticipated. As revealed by The Times, a record compensation figure of £22million was agreed to bring Potter to Stamford Bridge.

The figure beats the previous record figure of £17.4million that Bayern Munich paid to RB Leipzig to secure Julian Nagelsmann when he joined the Bundesliga giants last year.

Roman Abramovich's era at Chelsea is renowned for its brutality, and no manager was handed a contract that exceeded four years in length. In addition to handing Potter a 5-year-contract, as football.london understands, paying such a substantial amount of money to hire Potter indicates that Todd Boehly intends to break away from the hire and fire culture that's brought undoubted success but sometimes a lack of stability in west London over the past 20 years.
