Chelsea in advanced talks to renew Thiago Silva’s contract but N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount futures in doubt

Chelsea are in advanced talks with Thiago Silva over a deal to take the defender’s contract beyond his 39th birthday.

The renewal until 2024 is an acknowledgement of the age-defying performances and leadership qualities of the Brazilian, after a dramatic transfer window where more than £300million was spent on younger players.

N’Golo Kante’s extension is also on the agenda, but the midfielder is reluctant to accept a two-year contract with an option for an extra year.

The 31-year-old, whose season has been wrecked by injury, is hoping for a three-plus-one deal.

The focus on players whose deals expire this summer has left those with 18 months on their contracts in the dark.

Co-owner Todd Boehly is handling Mason Mount’s new proposed seven-year contract, but little progress has been made.

The 24-year-old, the club’s player of the season for the last two seasons, remains among the lowest paid at the Bridge and wants a salary similar to friends in the England team.

Chelsea have yet to offer those terms, pointing to the security longer deals have offered eight January signings, who earn on average around £70,000 a week, well below the market rate for a top-level player.

Liverpool and other ‘Big Six’ Premier League clubs are ready to test Chelsea’s resolve in the summer, and the new regime could be inclined to sell Mount.

Mateo Kovacic and Conor Gallagher have had no contact on new deals, amid speculation that they could also be moved on in the summer.
