Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries is expected to look for a new club this summer after a move to Chelsea in January never materialised. Instead of pursuing that particular deal, Todd Boehly and Co. chose to sign French defender Malo Gusto before loaning him back to Lyon for the remainder of this season.
A right-back was identified as a key transfer target for the club due to the injury concerns regularly impacting first-choice option Reece James. This point was amplified during the current international break, when James withdrew from the England squad due to an 'ongoing issue' with a minor hamstring injury.
It was believed Gusto could be the perfect solution to the problems facing James, but the teenager suffered his own injury during just his second game back in France and subsequently returned to Cobham to undergo his rehabilitation. This could lead to the club renewing their interest in Dumfries, who was valued at £30million in the last transfer window.
