Chelsea identify Harry Kane alternative as first Mauricio Pochettino transfer amid Man Utd plan

Chelsea and Manchester United could lock horns over the signing of Jonathan David this summer, despite the growing possibility of Harry Kane being available. The Lille striker has been previously linked with a switch to Arsenal but, following the arrival of Gabriel Jesus in the summer, the Gunners' interest seems to have fizzled out.

football.london understands that Edu held meetings with the player's representatives back in December 2021, but a move failed to materialise. However, the north Londoners' pursuit of David is not reflective of his impressive performances recently; the 23-year-old has featured 31 times for Lille in Ligue 1 this term, directly contributing towards 25 goals.

David has played an integral role in the French outfit's success this season, with Paulo Fonseca's side on course to secure a European qualification spot. With Chelsea and Manchester United clearly in the market for a talisman figure up front, the Canada international has emerged as an attractive option.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, Chelsea, United and Tottenham all want to sign David. Spurs appear to also be in the market for a new striker, with the strong possibility that Harry Kane will leave once his contract expires at the end of next season.

The 29-year-old is yet to commit his long-term future to Tottenham and numerous top European clubs are said to be keeping tabs on his situation. Prior to Fabio Paratici taking an immediate leave of absence and subsequently leaving Spurs, football.london understood that he had been in contact with the England international's entourage to discuss fresh terms.

However, as it stands, Kane is yet to put pen to paper on any deal as such. While it may pain Daniel Levy, by allowing the striker to join Chelsea or United, Tottenham would have one less club rivalling Spurs for the signature of David – not to the mention the extra windfall potentially secured from his exit.

In December 2022, the Canadian was asked about his future. David said: "I am aware of nothing. When I am at the World Cup I am just focused on trying to enjoy the World Cup and enjoying the moment.

"What happens after I do not know, we will have to see. The Premier League is the best league in the world and I think every player would want to play there some day.

"What makes the difference at the highest level is the smallest differences. Any player who plays at the World Cup, no matter what the outcome, you become a better player, you learn from it, and it helps you grow."
