Chelsea Handler and comedian Salma Hindy have become embroiled in a public dispute over why Hindy stopped opening for Handler, with Palestine at the centre of competing accounts of what happened. Hindy has alleged that her professional relationship with Handler deteriorated after she raised the Israel-Palestine conflict with the comedian, while Handler has rejected the claim and says Hindy withdrew from the remaining shows herself.
The dispute has now escalated, with Hindy saying Handler told her privately that she had contacted lawyers and considered Hindy's account defamatory. Hindy says she is not pursuing legal action herself and is instead seeking legal advice.
Hindy Says Palestine Conversation Cost Her Shows
Hindy, a Canadian-Egyptian comedian, recently shared her account of the events in an Instagram video.
She said she had developed a close relationship with Handler after opening for her during earlier performances. According to Hindy, she contacted Handler in October 2023 to ask whether she wanted to discuss Palestine and Israel following the Hamas attacks and the subsequent war in Gaza.
Hindy said Handler did not respond to that message and that she was subsequently removed from three of 12 planned shows because the dates had allegedly been given to another performer.
The pair later worked together again in December 2023, when Hindy said they performed several shows in Canada.
Hindy Claims Their Relationship Changed
Hindy said she later discussed Palestine with Handler privately over dinner. She also criticised material Handler had shared publicly that Hindy considered Islamophobic and dehumanising. Hindy said she subsequently posted a message supporting Palestinians without directly naming Handler.
She alleged that additional shows she had been expected to perform were later cancelled and that she struggled to recover travel and accommodation expenses connected to the appearances.
Hindy also said her manager believed she was being pushed out because of her position on Palestine, although she acknowledged that this was not a direct written statement from Handler.

Chelsea Handler Strongly Denies the Allegation
Handler has publicly disputed Hindy's version of events.
In a response posted beneath Hindy's Instagram video, Handler said Hindy had actually quit opening for her and claimed she had emails from Hindy's agents supporting her account.
Handler also rejected the suggestion that she would remove someone from her tour because of a political disagreement, writing that she had never fired Hindy over the issue. She subsequently shared screenshots that appeared to show communications between the comedians' representatives.
One message from Handler to Hindy discussed difficulties involving travel advances and representatives, while another message apparently sent from Hindy in January 2024 said she would not be able to perform the remaining four shows.
Hindy Says She Withdrew Under Pressure
Hindy has since offered additional context about that message.
She said she ultimately withdrew from the remaining dates after her representatives told her that reimbursement had been refused and warned that continuing to push the issue could damage her professional relationship with Handler.
Hindy stressed that these were communications from her representatives rather than direct written statements from Handler.
She also said her manager told her he believed Palestine was behind the situation, but acknowledged that this was his interpretation rather than something Handler had directly told her.
Dispute Escalates Over Alleged Defamation
The disagreement has now moved beyond the original dispute over the comedy shows.
According to Hindy, Handler has privately said she contacted lawyers and considers Hindy's public account libellous. Hindy says she is not initiating legal proceedings and is instead seeking advice from lawyers experienced in defamation, media law and First Amendment issues.
Neither side's full account has been independently established, and the available messages provide competing pieces of the timeline rather than a definitive explanation for every cancelled appearance.
The controversy has nevertheless placed renewed attention on the potential professional consequences comedians can face when political and personal disagreements spill into their working relationships. For now, the central dispute remains unresolved, with Hindy maintaining that Palestine played a role in the breakdown and Handler firmly denying that she removed the comedian because of her political views.
