Chelsea handed Champions League confirmation as Graham Potter prepares for first game in charge

Chelsea's Champions League group-stage clash against Red Bull Salzburg will go ahead as planned on Wednesday evening – and the match will be Graham Potter's first in charge of the Blues since replacing Thomas Tuchel as head coach.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday, lengthy discussions took place throughout today (Monday) between the Metropolitan Police and UEFA as to whether the match at Stamford Bridge – which kicks off at 8pm UK time – could still go ahead as scheduled.

It was eventually settled upon that the clash could still be held and that will give Potter his first taste of life in the Chelsea dugout and of Champions League football following his appointment last week.

The Premier League trip to Fulham at the weekend was supposed to be the 47-year-old's opening match at the helm but the game was postponed following the passing of The Queen. The monarch's funeral is set to take place in London next Monday and that, as a result, has impacted Chelsea's match against Liverpool on Sunday.

Due to concerns over policing, the high-profile fixture between the sides has been called off and will now take place later in the campaign. It means Potter's first top-flight match in charge of Chelsea will not be until October 1 against Crystal Palace.

A statement released by the Premier League read: "Following extensive consultation with clubs, police, local Safety Advisory Groups and other relevant authorities, there was no other option but to postpone the three fixtures.

"The Premier League would like to thank the UK Football Policing Unit and other police forces across the country, as well as our broadcast partners, for their support during this process, and will continue to liaise with them ahead of the weekend.

"For the matches being played during the period of National Mourning, tributes will be paid to The Queen at Premier League stadiums. New dates for the postponed matches will be announced in due course."
