Chelsea given 54 reasons to be worried about Noni Madueke transfer as £35m agreement close

Noni Madueke's injury record does not appear to be a deterrent for Chelsea as Todd Boehly closes in on a £35million deal for the PSV star. The 20-year-old winger has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this month despite having suffered a huge knock at the start of the season.

In the summer, he picked up an ankle injury following a collision in training. Madueke, who left Tottenham in 2018, was set to be out until November but he returned to action a month ahead of schedule.

Despite a speedy recovery, the England youth international still missed 18 games for the Dutch giants. Madueke has since featured just nine times for Ruud van Nistelrooy's side this term, directly contributing towards two goals.

While his impressive performances for PSV have courted the interest of Europe's biggest clubs - including Chelsea - the Englishman's injury record is an issue. Madueke has a reoccurring habit of picking up knocks which keep him on the sidelines for some time.

Throughout his career, he has missed 54 games for the Dutch side due to injury. In fact, last season, Madueke missed 25 games due to four separate muscular injuries in September, October, December and April.

Ordinarily, the winger's tendency to pick up a knock may only be a minor issue. But, with Chelsea's injury record in mind, Madueke's history could be a big problem.

The Blues have had as many as 11 players nursing injuries at once this season, with a few of whom returning to the doctor's table soon after their initial return. Reece James suffered a knee injury in Chelsea's 2-0 win over AC Milan in November following a collision with Theo Hernandez.

Then, in his first game back after missing the World Cup, the defender triggered his knee injury to extend his period on the sidelines. James has since returned to first-team training at Cobham.

Speaking to the press last week, Graham Potter has admitted that he is trying to 'get to the bottom' of Chelsea's injury problems this campaign. The 47-year-old insisted that there are no patterns to the issues that have plagued the Blues.

"No, not at the moment," Potter said when asked if he has found the root of Chelsea's injuries. "The nature of them, it’s almost like there’s not even a pattern.

"They are different problems. It’s tricky and it’s not like we are overtraining or anything like that. It is just something we certainly need to get to the bottom of."
