Chelsea XI vs Southampton: Starting team news and predicted lineup with Reece James ruled out

Reece James has been ruled out as Chelsea travel to face Southampton tonight.

The defender has been struck down by illness. Harvey Vale and Billy Gilmour have been called up as replacements for both James and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who earlier joined Bayer Leverkusen on loan.

Kalidou Koulibaly returns, though, after serving a suspension for his red card against Leeds and he duly missed Saturday’s win over Leicester City at Stamford Bridge. He starts alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva.

Conor Gallagher, however, is suspended himself after picking up two bookable offences on Saturday. That adds to a midfield selection headache for Tuchel, who namechecked young Carney Chukwuemeka as a potential option.

He starts on the bench, with Mason Mount and Jorginho lining up in midfield.

Elsewhere, Raheem Sterling once again leads the line and his budding partnership with Marc Cucurella continues at Ben Chilwell’s expense.

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Koulibaly, Cucurella, Loftus-Cheek, Jorginho, Mount, Ziyech, Havertz, Sterling

Subs: Kepa, Chilwell, Ampadu, Chukwuemeka, Gilmour, Kovacic, Pulisic, Vale, Broja

Referee: Michael Oliver
