Chelsea fail double Barcelona test as Raphinha transfer blow uncovers Todd Boehly flaw

Over the next week, football.london will be taking a look back at the key events at Stamford Bridge over an unforgettable 2022.

And so the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital era began. June saw the beginning of a chaotic summer which would only increase the whiplash suffered by supporters already in a manic 2022.

Confirmation of player exits came first, most notably that of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen at the end of their contracts. Both defenders had dominated transfer discussion throughout the entire season, at one point it appeared like Christensen was close to agreeing a new deal before talks broke down rapidly.

The sanctions proved decisive in Rudiger's case, reportedly unsure by Chelsea's ownership situation as negotiations could not resume, leading to his departure. Both players would end up in Spain, signing for La Liga's two big hitters respectively with Rudiger to Real Madrid and Christensen to Barcelona.

It was not only squad exits dominating headlines, but also behind-the-scenes shake-ups that rocked supporters. The biggest exit came later in the month as director Marina Granovskaia was confirmed to be leaving. Earlier in the same week, chairman Bruce Buck was also confirmed to be leaving.

Granovskaia leaving caused the biggest upheaval given her importance to Roman Abramovich, running the day-to-day operations and being the leading negotiator in transfer negotiations, the Russian-Canadian broke new ground and gained a great reputation in the industry as the "Iron Lady" for her tough stance. Eyebrows were raised when Boehly announced he would be acting as interim sporting director for a massive transfer window.

On the 27th, Petr Cech would step down from his role as technical and performance advisor to cement the radical change in the hierarchy. Cech played an important role in convincing Thomas Tuchel to become head coach at the beginning of 2021, acting as a good middleman between the head coach and ownership.

The month ended with mass speculation over Chelsea agreeing a fee with Leeds United for winger Raphinha whilst reports continued over a strong pursuit for Raheem Sterling from Manchester City as pre-season was about to commence.
