Chelsea defender handed fresh January transfer revival amid AS Monaco 'disappointment'

Malang Sarr could be set to end his difficult loan spell at AS Monaco to make another temporary switch to Sevilla. The defender has struggled to become a regular member of Philippe Clement's side this season after moving to France in the summer.

The 23-year-old has appeared 12 times in all competitions for Monaco, starting only six times in all competitions. The loan switch to the Stade Louis II was intended to provide the Chelsea defender an opportunity to play regular first team football, but it ultimately hasn't worked out that way.

Back in December, Sarr's agent Federico Pastorello acknowledged that his client's time in France could finish earlier than expected, despite insisting that Monaco are happy to make the switch permanent. "He is a boy I would see very well in Italy. At Monaco his playing time is limited, but they are happy with him, we will see if they will let him leave as soon as offers arrive," he told Tuttomercatoweb.

"But clearly there is a bit of disappointment on the part of the boy, he would have liked to find more playing time by moving from Chelsea. There’s a whole second half of the season, we’ll see. We will work on it."

Now, with the January window still upon us, the Daily Mail have reported that Spanish side Sevilla have grown interested in signing Sarr should his loan spell in France be cut short. Jorge Sampaoli's men are currently fourth in La Liga and are said to be keen on Sarr to bolster their defensive options.

Following Benoit Badiashile's signing from AS Monaco earlier this month, Sarr's opportunities at Chelsea look limited in the near future. The club have improved their defensive options over the past two windows, meaning they could set to receive a welcomed profit after acquiring him on a free transfer in August 2021.
