Chelsea continue to benefit from tough Frank Lampard decision as Everton come to same conclusion

A lot of similarities can be drawn from the sacking of Frank Lampard at Chelsea and at Everton. The 44-year-old has reportedly been dismissed from his position as a Premier League head coach in January for the second time in his career — and this is just the first of many parallels!

Although not officially confirmed by the club at the time of writing, Lampard appears to have been relieved from his duties on Merseyside, leaving Everton in the relegation zone, only off the bottom courtesy of a better goal-difference than Southampton, with the Toffees winless in eight Premier League games.

Despite showing spells of great promise under the Englishman's stewardship, Everton averaged just one point per game, winning 12, drawing eight and losing 24. Now, in a bid to arrest the club's poor run of form, the Toffees seem poised to follow Chelsea's lead and cut their ties in January, hoping for a similar new-manager bounce.

So, with that being said, football.london has taken a look at the parallels between Lampard's sacking at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park.

Christmas joy has passed

Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich sacked the club's all-time top goal scorer in January 2021 — Thomas Tuchel, his successor, went on to guide the west Londoners to Champions League glory. While it's impossible for Everton to secure European glory, escaping the relegation zone this term would be just as important for the club.

As it happens, sacking Lampard continues to benefit the Blues. The Englishman exposed the club to the quality of the academy at Cobham, laying the foundations for a bright future.

But, more importantly, Lampard also helped highlight a number of players who needed moving on to allow the youth to come through and now under Potter, Todd Boehly looks set to finally do just that.

Backing of the fans

Lampard has struggled for points but he's seemingly had the support of Everton fans throughout — just like at Chelsea. Though, difficult decisions always have to be made, differentiating the head from the heart.

Demise of a ball-playing shot-stopper

At Chelsea, Kepa Arrizabalaga fell incredibly out of form leaving Lampard no choice but to sign Edouard Mendy. At Everton, while the former Blues boss didn't sign a new goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford has struggled just as much as Kepa at times, both of whom have bright futures as ball-playing shot-stoppers.

The facilitation of new young stars

As briefly mentioned, Lampard facilitated the breakthrough of several youngsters at both Chelsea and, now, Everton. Probably more so at Stamford Bridge but the Toffees can look forward to the likes of Vitaliy Mykolenko and Ellis Simms fulfilling their potential at Goodison Park.
