Chelsea can save £22m as Todd Boehly gifted perfect solution to Serie A striker transfer puzzle

Chelsea appear to have been handed a huge boost towards welcoming Tammy Abraham back to Stamford Bridge, if Todd Boehly wishes to activate the striker's buyback clause. The 25-year-old enjoyed an electric start to life at Roma but he's since struggled to reach the same heights of late.

Abraham, who sees his contract at the Stadio Olimpico expire in 2026, has featured 27 times for Jose Mourinho's side in the Serie A this season, directly contributing towards just ten goals. The Italian giants have confirmed that Chelsea inserted a clause into the England international's contract which allows them to re-sign him this summer if they wish.

However, Tiago Pinto, Roma's general manager, did not specify the fee, though it's said to be in the region of €80million (£70.5m). Abraham has been heavily linked with a return to Chelsea since leaving in 2021 but his eye-watering buyback clause has always proven difficult to justify.

But, the west London outfit might have just been gifted the perfect answer to their question on a silver platter. According to Calciomercato, Roma are willing to sell Abraham for a fee in the region of €45m (£39.7m).

While, of course, the Blues' buyback clause is far greater than the striker's market value, the report states that Chelsea will be granted priority in any negotiations. Calciomercato add that Romelu Lukaku has emerged as a potential bargaining chip for the Blues should they look to sign Abraham as part of a player plus cash proposal.

With the Englishman valued at £39.7m and the Belgium international priced at £17.6m, Boehly could save himself £22.1m. However, the report concludes by stating that Chelsea could face tough competition from Aston Villa, who are 'more interested' in the Cobham graduate.

Despite Abraham's misfortunes this season, Pinto is confident that the striker will recapture form soon. Speaking to Sky Italia, as quoted by Calciomercato, the Roma chief said: "He’s on seven goals.

"The forwards also have other ways of helping the team. We and he were waiting for other numbers but that’s how it is for the forwards.

"If they score for two games, everything becomes different. He helped us last season [and] he does it again this year. But we have two strong forwards and he has to push more. I’m confident because he can give us a hand."
