Chelsea and Real Madrid players left stood in silence after awkward anthem blunder

If Chelsea were in need of an electric atmosphere to help them overturn a 2-0 deficit against Real Madrid, then their own tannoy system let them down.

As is customary in Europe's biggest club competition, both sets of players lined up for the Champions League anthem. The problem is, the music failed to materialise.

It made the pre-match formalities all the more awkward, as the camera panned across both sets of players. And respective captains Thiago Silva and Karim Benzema still sought to lead a round of applause, just without the usual cue to do so.

It's far from the only PA blunder at Stamford Bridge of late. Amid their 2-1 defeat against Brighton, a graphic on the stadium screen announced Cody Gakpo as a substitute for the visitors, instead of Danny Welbeck.

The error was made all the more bizarre by dint of the fact that Gakpo plays for Liverpool of course. Fans of The Seagulls saw the funny side though, singing "Cody Gakpo, he's one of our own" as well as "If Gakpo scores, we're on the pitch."

Many fans noted the Blues had been denied hearing an anthem they are unlikely to hear for some considerable time. They entered the game 2-0 down after the first leg at the Bernabeu and staring at elimination from Europe's premier club competition.

Fan discontent has already been heightened of late with the side lying 11th in the Premier League. And the defeat to Brighton represented a a third straight loss since Lampard returned as interim boss following the sacking of Graham Potter.

There was no shortage of noise when the game did get underway, with Frank Lampard's men seeking a minor miracle to keep their Champions League campaign - and season - alive. But a goalless first half left Chelsea needing to score at least twice in the second half.
