Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino face contract ultimatum as crucial deal yet to be agreed

Christopher Nkunku, Andrey Santos, Malo Gusto and any returning loanees will all be added to Chelsea's squad for next season. It could take the initial number of players up to nearly 40. For the new coach, heavily expected to be Mauricio Pochettino, it poses a massive question.

It is also a challenge. How to deal with it, who to cut from the group, just what number is the happy medium to provide squad depth but not too much and is this all possible? It's certainly a big task. This is without factoring in more arrivals coming in during the transfer window.

These are widely covered issues that face the prospective new boss at SW6. Another big sliding doors problem is the unknown future for Mason Mount. Whilst the season enters its final weeks the 24-year-old is recovering from injury. All of this comes whilst his contract prepares to enter the final 12 months.

It is another commonly discussed issue around the club. Mount is expected to be sold this summer if he cannot come to an agreement with the club over an extension. There are interested parties including Liverpool circling to take advantage but no decision has been reached yet.

However, The Times report that he is 'likely to leave' over the summer as a stand-off continues. It means that the Englishman could have played his last game for the club. This is far from the last that will be heard in the Mount case though, it was only last week that reports emerged from the Evening Standard that Todd Boehly had held talks himself with Mount over a new, shortened deal after the initial proposals continued a trend of baseball style long-term offers.

It has also been confirmed that although detailed talks have been pushed back until later this season, dialogue between player and owner have taken place. In these, it is said by David Ornstein, Mount was told just how important he is amid hope an agreement can be reached.

The other factor to take into account here is Pochettino himself. The former Tottenham boss has a reputation for advancing young players and forming bonds with his squad. With his desire to build a core of homegrown players, and Mount's natural role in a Pochettino system, he is likely to be a pivotal part of early plans.

It is something that could be crucial to both parties in the coming weeks and days as talks, both formal and informal across the club, reach a decisive point. Mount on one hand could be relying in Pochettino before committing his future whereas the latter will be working with a potentially defining decision either way.
