Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham: Pressure eases on under-fire Sonia Bompastor as Blues reach FA Cup semi-finals

Veerle Buurman's stunning late strike sealed Chelsea's place in the FA Cup semi-finals as the holders edged Tottenham 2-1 at Kingsmeadow.

The 19-year-old struck with a fierce effort that beat Spurs goalkeeper Lize Kop in the 86th minute, ensuring Sonia Bompastor's side still have a chance of rescuing a disappointing season.

Eveliina Summanen's cross earlier deceived Hannah Hampton to get the visitors back on level terms seven minutes into the second half, after Sam Kerr's header had put the Blues ahead five minutes before the interval.

The Blues were fresh off their Champions League defeat to Arsenal last week, with questions asked of head coach Sonia Bompastor, who was controversially sent off after protesting a late hair pull in the Blues’ 1-0 win on the night, but 3-2 defeat on aggregate.

Chelsea are nine points adrift of league leaders Manchester City in the Women’s Super League and as such, could see their hopes of retaining their domestic treble dashed.

The Frenchwoman won the three trophies in her first term in west London, with Chelsea the runaway champions in the WSL by 12 points, and they beat Manchester United 3-0 in last year’s FA Cup final.

They also lifted the League Cup earlier this year but the long wait for a European cup continues.
