Chelsea 10-minute FA Cup audition proves Thomas Tuchel's big confusion ahead of Burnley test

The 10-minutes at Kenilworth Road on Wednesday that saw Chelsea confirm their place in the last eight of the FA Cup so perfectly encapsulated why the Blues attack has been so confusing to assess this year.

Both Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku scored, two players heavily maligned and out of form combining for the Belgian's finish with 12 minutes of normal time remaining.

But up until that point, little could have indicated this sudden spark of inspiration. Both had frustrating evenings aside from those 10 minutes. Goals have been severely lacking in Chelsea's attack, so Thomas Tuchel can be thankful he did not have to rely on his defenders to bail him out of a potential cup upset.

A key question remains ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash with Burnley: who starts?

Granted, Werner and Lukaku are coming off the morale boost of goals. You could argue Lukaku should have two given the tight offside call at Wembley. Turf Moor might provide the platform for the duo to continue their connection against weaker opposition.

But that last paragraph there is part of the problem. I feel like I've been writing similar all season. We are encouraged by small glimpses into greater connections, only for them to quickly fade away come the next encounter.

It is hard to say with any conviction what Chelsea's best attack is, and even that line feels like it has lost a lot of its weight, given how frequently we have said it.

Does Tuchel revert to the attack against Lille and Liverpool with Kai Havertz leading the line? Both performances were encouraging. Chelsea created good looks at goal and appeared to have a crisper edge to their play.

Although Havertz netted in the Champions League, it was on Sunday where the flaws crept in as a host of great opportunities were spurned. This became a theme at the back end of last season before Chelsea broke their transfer record for Lukaku.

Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, and Mason Mount floating around Havertz added effective movement and fluidity, more in keeping with the style Tuchel was developing last season.

Against Burnley, though, you have to factor in a more reserved and compact opposition. Liverpool offered Chelsea space to exploit. The sort of space rarely afforded to the European and World champions.

Sean Dyche's Clarets are fighting for their Premier League status, and as November's reverse fixture proved without Lukaku, missing chances can prove costly as Chelsea dropped two points.

Probably since their return to the top flight in 2016, this is the most severe danger Burnley's place in it has been with 13 games remaining.

A recent win against Spurs, plus a convincing performance to comfortably swat aside Brighton proves Burnley are not a lost cause. This game is unlikely to be comfortable, although Turf Moor is a ground Chelsea have enjoyed playing at in recent years.

Over our last three visits to Lancashire, Chelsea have netted 11 goals. Saturday's away trip might provide the perfect storm for several of Tuchel's attackers to flourish, though few of us will be stunned if the opposite happens.

Though what that attack actually looks like come 2 pm on Saturday when the lineup is announced is anyone's guess at this point.
