Chef tries to turn humble spud into £80 dish - but some compare it to dead skin

A chef has attempted to turn a humble potato into a gourmet dish worth more than £80, after he was put up to the task by a content creator known for his unique food challenges.

Danny Kim, 26, asked Korean chef Jae Lee to make a "measly" potato into a meal that people would pay up to $100 (£82) for and shared the results of the challenge on his social media platforms.

The content creator first handed Jae some potatoes that he had humorously drawn faces onto with a marker pen, before the chef set about transforming the spuds into a dish fit for royalty - or at the very least, fit for someone willing to pay through the nose for a simple tuber.

Jae started by peeling and boiling the potatoes, before moving onto the pieces that would accompany his dish - including a delicious honey butter sauce.

The chef combined two whole blocks of butter with honey and sugar in a pan and left it to cook while he focused on the seasoning, made up of seaweed, sesame seeds, sugar, and salt.

Once the spuds were boiled, Jae grated them into a bowl and added flour, salt, and truffle oil, before forming the potato mixture into small cylindrical shapes.

Giving them a quick fry, Jae then covered the potatoes with the honey butter he prepared earlier and finished them with the seaweed seasoning and grated truffle.

He told Danny after his creation was complete: "That's $100 a bite."

Jae's fancy potato dish caused a storm on TikTok, with the post racking up 1.4 million views and 143,700 likes - but not everyone was convinced, with some saying the grated truffle on top resembled "dead skin".

One person wrote: "Cool video but I'm not paying 100$ for hashbrowns."

While another added: "The truffle looked like dead skin."

And a third posted: "Looks nice but it is further away from a 100-dollar bite than a Fiat from a Ferrari."

There were also several people who loved the look of the dish, however, as a few even said it should be sold in a restaurant.

Someone said: “I’m convinced that would be the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten. Amazing video.”

As someone else wrote: “It looks so good. I feel like [sushi restaurant] Yo! should have this."
