Cheetah dies at Edinburgh Zoo two months after arrival

A CHEETAH has died at Edinburgh Zoo just two months after arriving.

In August, Edinburgh Zoo welcomed Cleo, a five-year-old northeastern cheetah, from the Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland.

It was the first time a cheetah had been kept at Edinburgh Zoo in 24 years.

However, on Wednesday it was announced that Cleo had died just a few months after arriving.

"We are sad to share that Cleo the cheetah died overnight (Wednesday October 2) despite the hard work of the vet team and keepers," a statement said.

"Cleo became a quick favourite with visitors and staff even though she was only here for a short time.

"Our conservation charity's expert teams are still trying to establish what the cause of death is but we believe it is related to liver failure. We will know more after a post-mortem examination.

"She will be sadly missed."
