Cheeky owl arrested for breaking into Connecticut home, released safely

Cheeky owl captured by police for breaking and entering into a home.

In a quaint town in Connecticut, USA, an unexpected guest caused quite a stir. A mischievous Eastern Screech Owl found its way into a West Hartford home, leading to a rather unusual encounter for the homeowners. The incident was promptly reported to the authorities, who swiftly came to the rescue.

The West Hartford Police Department, in collaboration with animal control officers and personnel from A Place Called Hope rehabilitation center, worked together to apprehend the captivating creature. A snapshot shared by the police department revealed the owl perched on a shelf amidst a collection of board games, seemingly unbothered by the commotion it had caused.

Fortunately, the vigilant efforts of the animal rescuers paid off, as the owl was safely captured. The feathered intruder was then transferred to the care of the A Place Called Hope rehabilitation center for necessary treatment and rehabilitation. The rescue center specializes in rehabilitating wild animals, providing them with the care they need to thrive in their natural habitats.

Christine Cummings, President of A Place Called Hope, shed some light on the curious incident. According to her, the adventurous owl most likely entered the premises through an uncovered chimney stack or a fireplace, finding itself in the homeowners' basement. She emphasized that such an environment is far from suitable for a wild owl and expressed relief that the intruder had been discovered.

Measuring as the second smallest owl species in Connecticut, this particular Eastern Screech Owl is believed to be a male, based on its size. Upon admission to A Place Called Hope, the owl exhibited signs of hunger and dehydration. Thankfully, no injuries were sustained during its escapade; however, the length of time it had spent trapped indoors remained a mystery.

A Place Called Hope's primary objective is to rehabilitate and release wildlife back into their natural habitats as soon as they are deemed fit for independent survival. In preparation for its release, the owl has been residing in an aviary space to acclimate to outdoor conditions. The plan is to return the owl to the same property it originated from since these territorial owls tend to remain within a specific area for their lifespan.

Christine Cummings also shared some interesting details about Eastern Screech Owls. These remarkable creatures come in two color variations, red and gray, with the owl in question being of the gray variant. Contrary to their name, they do not actually screech. Instead, their vocalization resembles a ghostly horse whinny. The misnomer can be attributed to the mistaken identification by James Audubon, who heard the sound of a Screech Owl while observing a Barn Owl.

As a fascinating bonus fact, Christine revealed that Eastern Screech Owls have a unique courtship ritual. During the process, the male owl will slowly wink at a potential mate. If the female owl reciprocates the gesture, it signifies her interest, and they are considered 'married' in their avian world.

In conclusion, this peculiar encounter between a curious Eastern Screech Owl and unsuspecting homeowners serves as a reminder of the unexpected encounters nature can bring. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the West Hartford Police Department and A Place Called Hope, the owl was successfully rescued, rehabilitated, and is soon to be released back into its natural habitat. It is a testament to the importance of wildlife conservation and providing care for our feathered friends when they find themselves in unusual predicaments.
