'Cheeky' little boy, 2, found dead in his bed hours after playing in the park

A heartbroken mum has opened up about finding her two-year-old son dead in his bed after playing in the park.

Catherine Brumfitt told the ECHO that she and her children had suffered with a viral infection when Albie began to get ill. The 37-year-old said that the contacted the doctors and tested Albie for Covid-19 but when he started to get better, she assumed the worst had passed for the toddler.

She took Albie to the local park on Friday, May 28, 2021, before going home and eventually putting her son to bed, along with his brothers Jenson and Caleb. But when she got up the next morning, Albie wouldn't wake up. She said: "He was very cheeky, he was just a happy and loving little boy.

"Him and Jenson were just inseparable. They were together all the time. Caleb has additional needs so he wasn't as involved. It was always Jenson and Albie together.

"He was just so happy and cheeky, your typical two-year-old boy. He was lovely.

"It was hard, me and my partner feel as though we didn't have time to grieve. I tried to do CPR on Albie and bring him back but we didn't realise he had been dead for too long.

"We thought he was sleeping in because he had been up in the night. We've tried to all support each other because we're a big family. Albie was a well-known child in the area, everyone loved him."

Catherine and her family found out that Albie had died after contracting bronchopneumonia and, with help from friends and family, moved out of their family home in Seacombe and moved to Leasowe due to the memories of the death. Now, the mum is looking to raise as much money as possible for Wirral Wings and Alder Hey's snowdrop team.

A family fun day has been organised at Oldershaw Rugby Club and will be held on April 22. She said: "What I plan to do is have lots of stalls there. There's going to be a bouncy castle and an assault course for the kids.

"It'll be a nice way of remembering Albie. Wirral Wings are amazing, even now they're checking in and offering support.

"When Albie died they got in touch with me and they ended up making his suit that he got cremated in out of my sister's wedding dress."
