Check your iPhone now - Apple release an urgent upgrade that you must download today

If you have an iPhone in your pocket it’s worth checking the Settings menu and downloading the very latest update as soon as possible. Apple has just released its first-ever Rapid Security Response upgrade which contains important fixes for its popular range of smartphones.

The US firm says that it recommends all users downloaded the new software as soon as possible to keep their devices safe and fully secure.

So what are Rapid Security Response updates? These speedy new patches have been created to sort bugs and glitches between major iOS releases. It basically allows Apple to keep the updates flowing faster throughout the year.

As Apple explains, “Rapid Security Responses are a new type of software release for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. They deliver important security improvements between software updates — for example, improvements to the Safari web browser, the WebKit framework stack, or other critical system libraries. They may also be used to mitigate some security issues more quickly, such as issues that might have been exploited or reported to exist "in the wild."

These new Rapid Security Responses are being delivered to iPhones running the latest iOS 16.4.1 software so if your device hasn’t got that OS loaded yet you won’t see this latest release.

Apple says that your device allows them to be applied automatically and, if necessary, will prompt you to restart your device.

However, it’s still worth checking to make sure things are fully up to date by heading to Settings > General > Software Update.

To switch on automatic updates, follow the instructions below.

iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates, then make sure that "Security Responses & System Files" is turned on.

Along with the iPhone, this update is also available for iPads and Macs.
