Whether you're organising an elaborate Easter egg hunt for the kids, hosting Easter dinner for the family or stocking up for the bank holiday, Easter can be a costly time of year. So heroically, Which? have crunched the numbers ahead of time to figure out which supermarket offers the best value for money.
Including Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, and Ocado, they created a shop that tested the price of everyday essentials as well as options for healthy lunches. 21 items were compared in the two weeks leading up to April 4, and the basket included items such as royal gala apples, bananas, sweet potatoes, own-label peanut butter, hummus, own-label spaghetti, onions and beef mince.
The cheapest basket came out at £24.49 and was purchased at Aldi, whilst it's main competitor, Lidl, came in at just over £1 more expensive. If shoppers had done the same shop at Waitrose they would have spent a massive £13 and almost 54% extra.
In a larger shopping test which consisted of a shopping trolley of 43 goods across the UK's leading supermarkets, Asda came out on top with the price of £80.30 which was £15.17 cheaper than Waitrose. Aldi and Lidl weren't able to partake in this test due to them not stocking some items on the list.
What about Easter Lunch?
If like many Brits across the country you're planning on cooking Lamb this Easter, then a whole lamb shoulder will vary in price depending on where you go. Tesco's price is cheapest at £8.50 per kg whilst Morrisons are selling it for £11 per kg. For those in search of a half lamb leg, Adsa came out cheapest at £10.99 per kg.
Those planning to cook chicken will want to visit Aldi for £1.87 per kg of chicken or the fixed price of £3.55 for anywhere between 1.6kg and 1.9kg for a whole chicken, whilst vegetarians are able to pick up a Linda McCartney frozen chicken roast for just £3 at Waitrose.
When it comes to side dishes, some supermarkets offer the same cheap prices as one another, but Aldi came out cheapest for the most items, including carrots (39p), baby potatoes (55p), marris piper potatoes (£1.15), organic broccoli (78p) and savoy cabbage (43p).
Although bargains can be bagged at many of the supermarkets across the country, Which?'s research shows that Aldi is certainly the cheapest so long as you aren't looking for branded goods. However, if you are loyal to specific brands when it comes to your food shop, then Asda might offer the lowest prices.
