Budget supermarket Aldi has been named the UK's cheapest place to shop for the month of June, by consumer champions Which?. They found shoppers could save over £16 on a basket of items there compared to the most expensive store.
The company analysis involved comparing the average prices of a shop consisting of the most popular groceries, at eight of the UK's biggest supermarkets. This study is completed every month, in order to find the UK's cheapest supermarket on average across the whole year.
In June, Aldi took the crown, where a basket of goods cost £75.25 on average across the month. Lidl was just behind Aldi, with a difference of £1.93 (£77.18). Waitrose was the most expensive this month, with a basket of goods totalling £91.80, that is 22 per cent more than Aldi – a difference of £16.55.
On a larger shop of 134 items, Asda came out on top - which is a title they have held since January 2020. This shop consisted of the original 42 items on the smaller list, including 92 more products, which included branded items like Cathedral City cheese and Andrex toilet paper.
The larger shop did not include budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl, as they don't typically stock some of the bigger branded items. In June 2023, it cost £333.16 on average for this shop in Asda, beating the next cheapest, Morrisons (£343.41), by £10.25.
Waitrose was an eye-watering £36.73 more expensive than Asda, coming in at £369.89, on average, for the trolley of comparable goods – 11 per cent more.
Ele Clark, Which? Retail Editor, said: "Millions of people are struggling during the worst cost of living crisis in decades, and Which?’s research shows why many shoppers are turning to discounters like Aldi and Lidl.
"Which? believes that supermarkets are currently falling short when it comes to helping shoppers.
"They have a responsibility to ensure everyone has easy access to basic, affordable food ranges at a store near them, and to provide transparent and comparable pricing so people can easily work out which products offer the best value."
