Five of the six Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers implicated in a racist group chat have resigned this month after messages allegedly showed them competing over arrests and traffic stops involving Black residents. The scandal has raised questions about the credibility of officers involved in criminal cases.
The fallout stretches far beyond the seven officers named by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). Defence attorneys across the city are already moving to scrutinise, pause, and in some cases dismiss arrests tied to the officers, arguing that allegations of bias could undermine an officer's credibility as a courtroom witness.
