Charlotte-area patients could gain two new hospitals and 200 beds if North Carolina approves a joint bid by Duke Health and CaroMont Health. The partners are seeking to build a 120-bed hospital in University City and an 80-bed hospital in the River District near Charlotte Douglas International Airport, WUNC reported on Oct. 14.
Nothing is guaranteed. North Carolina requires health systems to obtain a certificate of need before adding hospital beds, and the systems expect a state decision by the end of March 2027. If the applications are approved and construction goes as planned, the hospitals could open in 2031.
