Charlotte Church was branded 'nasty little piece of work' in toxic feud with Cheryl

Savage name calling, threats of violence and a toxic feud - not something you'd expect from two of the nation's greatest singers.

Back in their heyday, Girls Aloud managed to clash with a load of celebs, going head-to-head with everyone from Lily Allen and Boy George to All Saints and Simon Amstell.

But one of their most bitter clashes came between the girl band and fellow singer Charlotte Church - and most intensely with Cheryl.

The beef started when Cheryl accused the Voice of an Angel singer of copying their sound with her 2005 pop song Crazy Chick.

Not taking it lying down, Charlotte bit back by saying: "Girls Aloud wouldn't be able to sing Crazy Chick if they possibly tried. They just don't have the range, darling.

"And when they've sold as many records as me, then they can comment. Maybe Cheryl is bitter.

"Actually I don't mind the rest of them. I've met Nadine and Kimberly a few times and they're nice. But Cheryl can go and take a running jump!"

Even the mob don't touch the families, but both ladies started to attack each other's men.

Chezzer dragged Charlotte's then boyfriend Gavin Henson into the row, sniping: "I don't know who she and her scabby boyfriend think they are. He looks like a girl and she's not even gorgeous.”

And outspoken Charlotte didn't take it lying down, hitting back by saying Cheryl had no backbone for staying with her cheating husband, former England footballer Ashley Cole.

Charlotte replied: "Look love, when you can sing f***ing Ave Maria, then you can have a go."

Then all hell broke loose when Cheryl brutally stuck the knife in over Charlotte's Walkers crisps TV campaign.

"Stuffing her face? Very appropriate," she said, branding her nemesis "a nasty little piece of work with a fat head".

Furious Charlotte retaliated by comparing the whole band to "five dogs without b***s" and threatened to deck Cheryl if their paths ever crossed.

"I think she just needs to grow up and get a hobby - golf or something, but stop having a go at me 'cos it's getting pathetic,” she raged.

"First of all, it was quite funny - but now it's just pathetic and I'm going to knock her out if I ever see her."

When the two singers found themselves at the same showbiz event they avoided each other – and Cheryl said: "I think she was scared of me."

Cheryl got back up from her Girls Aloud bandmates, with I’m A Celebrity star Nadine Coyle joining the clash and branding the Welsh singer "pathetic".

"She can keep saying things about us as long as she wants but we’re not bothered. She’s got no vocal style – anyone can sing the songs the way she does. There’s nothing special there,” she snapped, according to author Jen Crothers.

They eventually buried the hatchet and Cheryl blamed the row on crossed wires while Charlotte admitted she was 'bored' of the bust-up.

Despite their past differences, Charlotte even went on to praise Cheryl by saying she was "really good" on The X Factor.

"I’ve got to say she was really good – it can’t have been easy. But I thought she carried it off and did very well. I enjoyed it," said Charlotte, who was a fan on Cheryl's debut solo single Fight For This Love.

She added: "It’s a good song and she looked great performing it on TV. Good luck to her."

Charlotte was unmasked as Mushroom (ITV)

Charlotte is appearing on this week's Life Stories with Kate Garraway, but her episode was actually supposed to air two weeks ago.

Originally, the Welsh singer was scheduled to appear in the first outing of the new series but the episode was pushed back and former England and Liverpool footballer John Barnes was seen in the hot seat.

Then her interview was replaced yet again the following week - with ITV claiming the switch was "due to an ongoing production delay".

Instead of the singer, Kate was seen interviewing The Great British Bake Off 2015 winner Nadiya Hussain in the second episode of the series.

Strangely, this came amid speculation that Charlotte was the celebrity hiding behind the Mushroom costume on The Masked Singer after cracking it from a phone-in number clue.

The conspiracy theorists believed her episode was being pushed back until she was unmasked on the singing contest.

And they were proven correct as Charlotte was revealed to be the person under the Mushroom costume during last weekend's final.

Charlotte even lied to her own mum (ITV)

"I took on the challenge because I liked the idea of the show being entirely centered around the voice, and I haven't sung in the public eye for quite some time now so it felt like the perfect opportunity," explained Charlotte.

"Also, I really wanted to design my own costume as I thought this would be very exciting to do, and it really was."

The singer explained that she even hid the truth from her own mother about her appearance on the show, which was won by Australian actress and singer Natalie Imbruglia.

"It's REALLY hard to keep the secret! I've even had to lie to my own mum," admitted Charlotte.

Speaking with a Northern accent, but appearing to sing with an Irish tone, many viewers were stumped by Mushroom's hints.

"The clue packages were really fun because of the accents I was able to do mostly," Charlotte confessed when looking back on her cryptic hints.

"That was so enjoyable and really playful to be able to showcase my different accents. A lot of the time, the clues were so wildly abstract, I didn't even realise it was me."

*Kate Garraway's Life Stories featuring Charlotte Church airs tonight at 9pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
