North Carolina's state treasurer moved that a new Atrium Health program for state employees could push the State Health Plan toward insolvency. The dispute comes as nearly 750,000 teachers, state workers, retirees and dependents prepare for open enrollment next week.
Atrium announced its Affordability Protection Program on Oct. 6. Starting Jan. 1, 2027, enrolled plan members would pay lower copays at Atrium for primary, specialty, outpatient and inpatient care. "If this Atrium program remains in place, it will bankrupt the State Health Plan," Treasurer Brad Briner told North Carolina Health News.
