Charlie Savage joins Manchester United first-team training

Charlie Savage trained with Manchester United's first-team at Carrington again on Saturday afternoon.

Savage started for United's U21s against West Ham in the Premier League 2 on Friday and the Manchester Evening News understands he was substituted at half-time during that match because he was set to train with Erik ten Hag's first-team.

The 19-year-old travelled on United's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia this summer and he impressed Ten Hag with his mature performances. Savage was the breakout youngster on that tour alongside fellow midfielder Zidane Iqbal.

It was therefore surprising that Savage was not included in United's Europa League squad B list announcement last week, which allows unlimited players born after 2000 and who have been on a club's books for two or three years to be included.

United added academy youngsters Radek Vitek, Tyler Fredricson, Kobbie Mainoo, Iqbal, Shola Shoretire and Charlie McNeill to the Europa League B list squad ahead of the opening match against Real Sociedad, but Savage was a notable omission.

It is understood that Savage was not injured and that he did not train with the first-team before that match at Old Trafford. It's worth noting that Savage can still be added to United's Europa League B list, permitted he is added 24 hours before a fixture.

Ten Hag attended United's U21s' match against West Ham on Friday and it was another opportunity for Savage to catch the manager's attention. Although Savage did not train with the first-team before Real Sociedad, he did in preparation for Thursday's match against FC Sheriff and he was at Carrington on Saturday afternoon for first-team training again before the start of the international break.

Ralf Rangnick handed Savage his first-team debut against BSC Young Boys in the Champions League last year. The midfielder is highly rated in the academy and he received loan interest from clubs in League One and the Championship this summer.
