Charlie Hatcher (R) defeated incumbent Andy Ogles (R) in the Republican primary for Tennessee's 5th Congressional District on August 6, 2026.
The Nashville Banner's Stephen Elliott said 2026 was "the second successive cycle that the embattled, bomb-throwing Ogles will have faced a well-connected primary challenger." In 2024, Ogles defeated Courtney Johnston (R) 56.5%–43.5%.
Hatcher served as Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture from 2019 to 2025. He was, as of the 2026 election, a farmer, livestock veterinarian, and the founder of the Hatcher Family Dairy. In an interview with News Channel 5 Nashville, Hatcher said, "I consider myself a work horse and my opponent is a show horse." Hatcher's campaign website said, "Think what President Trump could do if our congressman spent less time talking and more time doing."
Ogles was elected to the House in 2022 and served as mayor of Maury County, Tennessee from 2018 to 2022. He earlier worked as a restaurant owner, real estate investor, and as executive director of the Laffer Center for Supply-Side Economics. Ogles' campaign website said he was "revered as Tennessee’s most conservative mayor ... He has always been a fighter, whether for limited government, better economic policies, or more freedom."
The election took place in the context of redistricting that changed the district boundaries from those used in 2024. Inside Elections' Jacob Rubashkin said the 2026 boundaries made the district more favorable for Republicans in the general election. As of June 2026, major election forecasters rated the general election Solid/Safe Republican. In 2024, Ogles defeated Maryam Abolfazli (D) 56.9%–39.5%.
