Charlie Bird apologises to public as he gives heartbreaking health update

Charlie Bird has apologised to his well wishers and supporters as he issued a heartbreaking health update.

The veteran RTE journalist, who is battling Motor Neurone Disease, has told the public that he is no long able to respond to correspondence personally. It's due to the deterioration of his health which includes more uncontrolled crying in public.

Charlie has recently suffered a couple of falls due to the condition which he was diagnosed with in late 2021. The 73-year-old has also lost the capability to speak and uses a computer with his voice to communicate.

He said: "I want to apologise to people who have supported me. I am still getting lovely letters and cards, but with my health situation, I can no longer respond personally. Also my crying episodes in public are getting worse. This uncontrolled crying is a symptom of my motor neurone."

Despite his ongoing health battles, Charlie continues to fundraise in aid of Irish charities including Pieta House and Irish Motor Neurone Association. His Climb with Charlie campaign has amassed over €3.2 million in donations.

Charlie recently fulfilled his life-long dream of meeting Bruce Springsteen after the rock n roll legend performed a series of concerts in the RDS. There was concern that Charlie would not be able to attend the gig at the time, as he was recuperating from a previous fall that occurred while he was out walking.

However, the plans went ahead and Charlie was able to meet the 'Born in the USA' singer during his time in Dublin. Video footage circulated online of Charlie enjoying the first of the three sold out RDS concerts.
