Charles Leclerc told his Ferrari team they had to cut out the errors after he finished fourth in the Monaco Grand Prix - having looked set for the win.
Sergio Perez took the chequered flag on Sunday ahead of Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen, who nudged to nine points clear of Leclerc in the championship standings after seven races.
While the Monaco-born driver did at least finish his first Formula One race around the principality, the curse which has followed him around his home streets refused to go away.
Ferrari first allowed Sergio Perez to undercut Leclerc in the first pit stop from Wet to Intermediate tyres before double-stacking him behind teammate Carlos Sainz for Hards only a few laps later, dropping him from first to fourth.
“Let down are not the words,” he told Sky Sports. “Sometimes mistakes can happen - but there have been too many mistakes today.
“In those conditions you rely on what the team can see because you cannot see what the others are doing. I was asked whether I wanted to go from wets to slicks and I said yes but not now, but I don’t understand what made us change our mind and go on the Intermediates.
“We got undercut and I stopped behind Carlos and there have been a lot of mistakes. We cannot afford to do that. It’s hard, as it has been the other years here so I’m getting used to getting back home disappointed. But we cannot do that, especially in the moment that we are in now - we are extremely strong, we need to take those opportunities.
“We cannot lose so many points like this. It’s not even first to second, it’s first to fourth because after one mistake we did another one. I love my team and I’m sure we will come back stronger but it hurts a lot.”
