Chaplain who was reported to anti-terrorism programme loses unfair dismissal claim

A reverend has lost his claim for unfair dismissal at an employment tribunal after he lost his job at a college in Long Eaton. Church of England chaplain, Dr Bernard Randall, was dismissed from independent Trent College in Long Eaton in 2019, after he told pupils during a sermon in the school chapel that it was ok for them to disagree with LGBTQ+ teaching.

It was decided that his sermon was harmful to pupils and he was reported to the anti-terrorism Prevent programme, a scheme which usually identifies those at risk of radicalisation. Dr Randall had since been seeking compensation over allegations of unfair dismissal and a recommendation under the 2010 Equality Act, reports Derbyshire Live.

He also brought forward claims of harassment, discrimination and victimisation against the college on the grounds of his Christian beliefs, and was supported by the Christian Legal Centre. A hearing took place in September 2022 and a verdict has now been decided.
