Chaos for London travellers as Leeds station power outage causes major disruption

Travellers have been advised not to travel after trains face disruptions due to a power outage at Leeds station.

National Rail has said that the disruptions to countless services today were caused by a power outage, which led to a signalling failure.

LNER services between London and Leeds and Bradford Forster Square have all been affected.

Rail services run by Northern, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express have also been disrupted.

Northern advised that none of its rail services were operating through Leeds.

Transpennine Express warned that all lines from Manchester Victoria and York via Leeds were closed.

All lines have now reopened, but National Rail has warned that disruption is expected until at least 7 pm.

LNER has advised customers to defer travel and use their tickets on Monday instead, where possible.

Passengers are also able to use services provided by other train companies at no extra cost.

The disruptions have sparked frustration amongst travellers, who took to social media to complain.

One user on X posted a photo of the crowds waiting in Leeds train station, accompanied with the caption: “Leeds train station .. like why does something always go wrong with trains and public transport.. it's a joke at this stage”

Another posted a fiery message aimed directly at Northern, writing: “@northernassist got to love your service. TWO trains cancelled to Leeds, no staff on the platform to inform passengers, so loads of folk stood around confused & angry. Another total s*** show”

In the photo, a crowd of travellers can be seen holding bags on the platform amidst the disruptions.

A spokesperson for National Rail told the BBC: "Engineers attended the site and restored power by 13:20.

“Some services were cancelled or delayed, and passengers are advised to continue checking before they travel.

"We apologise for the disruption and thank passengers for their patience."
