Channel 4's new docuseries Emergency shows man's fight for life

Channel 4 has launched a gripping new documentary series following the London Major Trauma System.

Airing over four consecutive nights, we will see the London Major Trauma System's day-to-day work, in a unique look at the interconnected network of 39 hospitals, air ambulances and paramedics that provide a lifeline for 10 million people in London and the South-East.

The Trauma System was established after the catastrophic 2005 bombings in which 52 people died and 700 were injured.

The documentary series was filmed during the busiest month of summer last year and viewers will be on the edge of their seats and they watch the minute-by-minute decisions made by top medics.

Stabbings, motorbike crashes, car accidents to someone falling off a cliff, medics have to make incredible tough decisions to save the most severely injured patients and these are just some of the examples captured in the show.

Channel 4 filmed patients throughout the trauma pathway. From roadside critical interventions, through resus to ICU, from surgery to rehabilitation to “reflect the variety of specialist treatment that went into saving patients' lives and putting them back together again.”

Tonight's instalment of the show saw Italian man, 28-year-old Danilo fight for his life after a motorcycle accident.

He suffered multiple serious injuries including many fractures and was placed into a medically induced coma after life saving surgery to repair his aorta - the main blood vessel from his heart.

But specialists still had the job of treating his multiple other injuries, including treating a shattered pelvis.

Orthopaedic surgeon, Chris, said: "Some of the patients we see with these types of injuries unfortunately don't survive, they potentially don't even get to hospital."

Danilo's partner, Giulia, broke down in tears as she explained the moment that she learnt about the devastating accident.

She said: "I was waiting for him to get home for dinner and he wasn't replying anymore to the messages so I kind of understood that something was wrong.

"After half an hour the police knocked and they told me he was involved in a very serious motorbike accident. They told me he was most likely not going to make it."

She apologised to the camera as tears flooded her eyes.

We also saw ex-Royal Marine Wesley awaiting surgery for an all-important spinal injury.

He required surgery using screws, plates and rods to connect his skull to his neck.

Emergency airs Monday February 28 - Thursday March 3 at 9pm on Channel 4.
