Channel 4's Food Unwrapped fans 'disgusted' after learning how corned beef is produced

Food Unwrapped fans have been left disgusted after learning how corned beef is produced in tonight's episode (May 9). The Channel 4 series travels the world to explore the industry secrets behind consumers' favourite food.

Chef and TV presenter Matt Tebbutt jetted off to Fray Bentos, Uruguay, to discover where the 'corn' is in corned beef. Fray Bentos shares its name with the popular brand known for selling tinned meat pies in the UK.

However, while Matt enjoyed seeing how corned beef is cooked, dubbing it a "beautiful meat sauna", viewers were put off by the food. Followers of the show took to Twitter to vent their revulsion.

@the_bojangles wrote: "@FoodUnwrappedTV #foodunwrapped remind me never ever ever to eat Corned Beef." They ended the Tweet with two sick emojis.

@cashinol agreed and commented: "Watching ‘Food Unwrapped’ on @Channel4 and the production of corned beef in Uruguay. Seeing how it’s produced is enough to put me off corned beef for life!"

One viewer even compared the section to the unusual comedy character Alan Patridge. @viewfromtheloo3 wrote: "This is as Alan Partridge as it gets #FoodUnwrapped #MeatSauna."

However, Matt was over the moon to uncover how corned beef got its name, with a factory employee revealing they add salt to the product "for flavour, and in the old days it was the corns of salt which gave the name corned beef". Matt added it "helps preserve the meat".

The episode also looked at the difference between Scottish and Irish Whiskey. It also explained what makes snacks so moreish.

Food Unwrapped next airs on Channel 4 on Monday (May 16) at 8pm. Tonight's episode is now available to watch on Channel 4's website.
