Channel 4's 24 Hours in A&E: Viewers emotional after teen goes into cardiac arrest

An emotional episode of 24 Hours in A&E hit our screens last night after a Nottingham teenager suffered a cardiac arrest whilst playing football. The episode, entitled 'Keep the Faith', aired on Tuesday, January 17, at 9pm and focused on 18-year-old Kye Wilson who was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre following the incident.

Kye was involved in a light training session with his football team when he suddenly collapsed. When his coach, Wes, discovered he wasn't breathing, he and other members of the team sprung into action; performing CPR on Kye and using a defibrillator.

Wes said he "didn't expect to ever see him again" once the ambulance arrived. Once in the hospital, consultant Craig and his A&E trauma team faced a race against time to restart his heart.

Kye's mother, Lorenda, was also heavily featured in the episode, often seen holding Kye and talking with him as doctors worked to try and save his life. Thankfully, Kye survived and viewers were able to witness an emotional reunion with Lorenda at the end of the show.

Viewers took to social media to share their thoughts. Taking to Twitter @cathdeans said: “Already in tears at Kye’s story. Very hard to watch. 24 hours in A&E.”

@Raven_M0rrigan tweeted: “Upsetting watching Kye and his family. As a mother too to a daughter who plays football and being a footy coach, I really hope he pulls through and recovers.

@LaraBadger1 said: ”Those coaches saved his life. What heroes.”

Episode three also introduced viewers to Tom, 30, who was in resus following a road traffic accident resulting in a seriously damaged ankle. Elsewhere, in minors, 23-year-old student Phoebe was with her new boyfriend Matt after she tripped in the library.
