Channel 4 fans 'lost for words' as woman narrates her own human dissection

Fans of Channel 4 were 'lost for words' after watching an 'inspirational' documentary where a woman narrated her own human dissection.

My Dead Body showed doctors as they dissected the body of Toni Crews, who had a rare cancer. Toni was a young mum with a terminal cancer who had donated her body to science to be studied.

Diagnosed with a rare cancer of the tear gland in 2016, which lead to her eye being removed, mother of two Toni discovered her cancer was terminal in 2020 and made the decision to continue to raise awareness of the disease – even after death.

She not only agreed to donate her body to medical science but also chose to give consent for it to be on public display. She died in August 2020 at the age of 30, and in 2022 Toni became the first public display cadaver in the UK since records began 180 years ago, and the first British cadaver to be seen being dissected in such a way, for almost 200 years.

The Channel 4 documentary has used voice replication technology to re-enact her diary entries and messages to her loved ones were heard on the programme using the voice.

Professor Claire Smith was seen leading workshops on Toni's body. She said it was a "privilege" and provided a vital learning experience for more than 1,000 students.

Speaking to The Mirror, she said: "We have been so privileged to explore the journey of cancer through the incredible donation made by Toni. As part of this documentary, we were able to invite more than 1,000 students, including nurses, paramedics and neuroscientists, who wouldn't normally get to learn about this one in a million cancer.

"Toni's gift of body donation doesn't end with this documentary either. Her body will be used to educate our medical students and doctors for years to come."

Viewers took to Twitter while watching as they branded the documentary "incredible". Kath said: "Truly incredible!! I am lost for words!! Toni Crews, Thankyou."

Another user said: "#mydeadbody so many emotions watching this documentary. A brave strong lady, a great family and brilliant NHS medical personnel. Hopefully Toni is now at peace."

Marc said: "#mydeadbody on channel 4. What an inspiration Toni was. And her family are. I am not sure I could watch one of my loved ones on tv like that though. Would find that near impossible. Hard watch."

Jess said: "#mydeadbody what a roller-coaster of a show! Really makes you evaluate life. Grateful for Toni giving such a gift to science. What a brave and inspiring lady."
