Channel 4's legendary breakfast show will not be returning to our screens anytime soon, despite being rebooted last year.
The Big Breakfast, which was first launched by the broadcaster in 1992, has been scrapped amid claims the broadcaster desperately tries to keep costs down, with several other shows and series axed during the brutal cull. But, the broadcaster has denied claims the move was a bid to save cash.
The iconic breakfast show was first launched in 1992, with Chris Evans and Gaby Roslin on presenting duties, alongside co-hosts Paula Yates, and Zig and Zag.
AJ Odudu and Mo Gilligan took over the reigns last year as the early morning show returned to our TV screens with a brand new look.
A spokesperson for the channel has confirmed the show will not return anytime soon but may make a comeback later down the line. They said: "Although there are no shows planned for this year The Big Breakfast may well return in the future."
The Big Breakfast enjoyed huge success after a reboot last summer.
The Big Breakfast had a series of hosts over the years, including Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan, who fronted the show from 1997 to 1999.
It ended in 2001, with Denise and Johnny returning to host the final episode of the legendary show, but was successfully rebooted as a one-off episode in 2021 as part of Channel 4’s Black to Front project, which aimed to improve Black representation on TV.
The show was then commissioned for a four-week run on Saturday mornings last summer, with former Strictly star AJ and comedian Mo at the helm, alongside Judi Love, Big Zuu and the Big Breakfast’s original newsreader Phil Gayle.
Gemma Collins, AJ Tracey and Melvin Odoom were also regular co-presenters, and the reboot indulged original fans with classic games including Family of the Week, One Lump or Two and Don’t Phone, It’s Just For Fun.
The news comes after it was announced last week that the late night comedy The Big Narstie Show, presented by the rapper, had been axed after five series.
Other shows up for the chop were Five Dates a Week, Scared of the Dark, and Rescue: Extreme Medics, with Naked Attraction and The Last Leg also having their episode orders cut in a reported bid to save money.
Popular reality show Four Weddings was another show culled in the "bloodbath", but Channel 4 insisted it was in "robust health".
"However like all commercial broadcasters we’re taking some precautionary measures - such as rephrasing some content and production - in response to a downturn in the ad-market.
"The vast majority of our shows have not been affected," they said in a statement earlier this month.
