Changing with the times? Cannes Film Festival in Johnny Depp controversy

THE DEBATE © FRANCE 24

This time, it’s an out-of-competition opening night film that's lighting the spark. Is the Cannes Film Festival in tune with the times when it rolls out the red carpet for Johnny Depp – megastar of the silver screen, and a polarising figure for those who followed his acquittal in the ugly bare-all trial that pitted the actor against ex-wife Amber Heard?

We ask about the festival feting Depp, who in his return plays France's King Louis XV, and how much has changed in the five years since the #MeToo reckoning.

In 2018, actresses posed on the red carpet against the film industry's predators. This year's competition features a record seven women directors. But that's not enough to wish away male and female aggressors, argues a group of 123 actresses who have penned an open letter to the festival.

We ask about old habits and a new entertainment landscape. The movie/streaming industry tells the stories of our times. How inclusive should they be? What kind of films should we be bankrolling and celebrating?

Produced by Yann Pusztai, Daphné Leprince-Ringuet and Guillaume Gougeon.
