Changes proposed to Ruchill Hospital development after homes criticised as 'monotone'

Plans to make changes to the housing development at Ruchill Hospital have been put forward by Bellway Homes.

Proposals for more than 400 homes on the Glasgow site were formally approved by Glasgow City Council back in February 2022, despite some objections to the plans. Construction began in Spring of the same year and the first properties were completed at the beginning of 2023.

Bellway Homes has developed the land at Bilsland Drive, with the A-listed water tower retained as a “central feature”.

New proposals have now been put forward to change the exterior of the homes after receiving feedback that the development appeared "monotone".

The company has put in plans for more "variety" to be added to the development in order to be more "beneficial to the urban realm". They have assured that all homes around the water tower will retain the red brick finish "to reflect adjacency to the tower".

A statement within the planning papers reads: "Construction of the residential development commenced in Spring 2022, with the first residential units completed in early 2023.

"Initial feedback on the development is that the streets that contain only units finished in red brick appear monotone in nature and that more variety in the streetscape would be beneficial to the urban realm.

"Bellway Homes wish to ensure the development offers the strongest possible contribution to the urban realm and therefore seeks approval to vary the finishes on a number of additional properties in line with feedback.

"It is proposed to increase the proportion of units with elevations comprised of render or a mix of render and red brick finishes by 16 additional plots, an increase of 4%.

"Units immediately adjacent the tower will retain the red brick finish, with the use of render increasing towards the perimeter of the site. In this way, the materiality of the site will reflect adjacency to the tower.

"In relation to the overall scale of the development, 72% of units are proposed to be remain entirely finished in red brick.The plan opposite denotes the location of the units where is it proposed to include additional render.

"Visualisations have been prepared to demonstrate the proposed changes, demonstrating the proposed increase in variety to the streetscape."
